City of Four Lakes

Exploring Madison WI

Madison WI serves as the Wisconsin state capital and seat of Dane County. As Wisconsin’s second largest city, Madison is home to more than 258,000 individuals. Rapid growth is largely attributable to the growing technology industry and healthcare startups. Surrounding Madison WI are four lakes — Lake Monona, Lake Waubesa, Lake Mendota, and Lake Kegonsa.

A Brief History of Madison, WI

history of madison wisconsin

Prior to European colonization, Native Americans lived on the land that is now Madison WI. In 1829, judge James Duane Doty purchased the land with the intention of building a city. Doty named the area Madison after the fourth President, and the locality was later selected as the capital of the Wisconsin Territory before being reaffirmed the capital when Wisconsin achieved statehood. Madison incorporated as a village in 1846, and later as a city in 1856. The University of Wisconsin opened its doors in 1849.

Through the Civil War, Madison hosted the Union Army, as well as a prison camp for Confederate soldiers.

During the 1960s-1970s, a large counterculture took hold in Madison. Residents of the famed “Miffland” area often clashed with local authorities. Coupled with the students of the University of Wisconsin, Miffland residents often participated in anti-Vietnam War protests, several of which resulted in injuries. This speaks to Madison WI’s long legacy of progressive political activity.

In the present day, Madison WI is the fastest-growing city in the state. History buffs can find 8 National Historic Landmarks, one of which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
